Verizon Foundation Accepting 2008 Grant Proposals

Connecticut Non-Profit Organizations Received $135,000 in 2007

WALLINGFORD, CT — Verizon Wireless, through the Verizon Foundation, is entering its sixth year of supporting eligible Connecticut non-profit organizations. Applications are welcomed from qualified public charities to support programs in three priority areas: Domestic Violence Prevention and Support for Survivors; Literacy; and Technology for Healthcare and Accessibility.

"We're committed to supporting Connecticut organizations whose programs are in alignment with our Foundation's priorities," said Ken Dixon, Verizon Wireless New England president.

Qualified Connecticut 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations are invited to submit 2008 grant proposals. Applications are accepted online only at www.verizon.com/foundation.  

In 2007, Verizon Foundation awarded a total of $135,000 to diverse Connecticut organizations, including:

Domestic Violence Prevention:
Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, East Hartford

$5,400 in support of technology upgrades to improve fundraising and coordination among 18 member organizations

My Sister's Place, Hartford
$5,000 toward the Life Skills for Women and Families in Crisis program, which includes shelter and access to community benefits and resources

Domestic Violence Crisis Center, Norwalk
$6,000 for individual and family counseling, safety planning, crisis intervention, advocacy and referral services

Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury
$5,000 to support survivors of domestic violence through bilingual counseling, crisis intervention, outreach, legal and housing services

The Center for Women and Families of Eastern Fairfield County, Bridgeport
$6,500 to provide software and hardware upgrades for support of advocacy services

YWCA of Greenwich Connecticut
$6,800 toward emergency counseling at the Domestic Abuse Service Crisis Intervention Center

Literacy:
American School for the Deaf, West Hartford
$5,000 toward after-school literacy enrichment program focusing on reading comprehension, vocabulary, language development and math skills

Burroughs Community Center, Bridgeport
$5,000 for after-school tutoring and mentoring program for at-risk 5th-9th graders

Cardinal Shehan Center, Bridgeport
$5,000 in support of after-school and summer tutoring for children in grades 1-8

CREC (Capitol Region Educational Council Foundation), Hartford
$5,000 to provide basic literacy, employment training, and job placement assistance to clients

Griffin Health Services Corporation, Derby
$2,500 to fund a computer literacy and child internet safety awareness program

Meriden-Wallingford Chrysalis
$4,800 for computer, educational and job training workshops for survivors of domestic violence in transitional living programs

Technology:
Bethel Recovery Center

$4,500 to support software and hardware technology upgrades to assist homeless women prepare for work opportunities

Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity
$5,000 to fund website enhancements for fundraising and inventory management

Hartford Interval House
$5,200 for computer upgrades to provide direct services to survivors of domestic violence

Quinnipiac Business and Education Foundation, Wallingford
$2,500 towards the Career Connection Online project, an interactive website enabling business and educators to collaborate in forging mentoring and career guidance partnerships

The Connecticut Institute for the Blind, Hartford
$5,000 to support the New England Assistive Technology (NEAT) Marketplace, a demonstration center that matches people with disabilities with assistive products and technologies
