LAS VEGAS, NV — According to the EPA, recycling 100 million cell phones would save enough energy to power nearly 200,000 U.S. households with electricity for one year. How close do we come? The EPA says fewer than 20 percent of the 130 million cell phones being retired this year will be recycled.

"The good news is each of us can make a difference" said Tony Heyman, regional president for Verizon Wireless. "Since we launched our national cell phone recycling program in 2001, we have kept more than 200 tons of electronic waste out of landfills."

To increase that impact, Verizon Wireless is encouraging everyone with a used wireless phone or accessory they're no longer using to the HopeLine® program.

Verizon Wireless offers these wireless tips for going green:

Recycle a no-longer-used wireless phone
On April 19, Go Wireless, a premium retailer for Verizon Wireless, will hold a special Earth Day HopeLine collection at 4150 Blue Diamond Road in Las Vegas.

Wireless phones and equipment can also be donated to the HopeLine program year-round at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store in Nevada and across the country. Donated phones, batteries and accessories will be disposed of properly or refurbished for resale and reuse, with proceeds going to victims of domestic violence.

Sign up for the Green Bill
Verizon Wireless' Green Bill gives customers a useful way to access, organize and analyze their account information, while at the same time, saving paper by eliminating the monthly bill in your mailbox. To sign up, visit www.verizonwireless.com/myaccount.

Unplug your charger when its not in use
Use a power strip for your wireless phone or PDA chargers, then make sure to switch it off when everything has been charged so you don't use "phantom" energy.

Download or preload directions in VZ Navigator (SM) to save fuel when traveling
Not sure how to get where you're going? Using VZ Navigator to find the most direct route to your destination could help you save on fuel costs. But, in case you need to fill up along the way, use FuelFinder (on Mobile Web) to find the least expensive gas for your car. (Charges apply)

Work from home — or elsewhere — with BroadbandAccess
Use Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service to create a mobile office anywhere (within the Broadband Access coverage area) including your home and save on gas and other commuting costs. (Charges apply)
