In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service, Verizon Wireless is expanding its network capacity during Hoopfest the biggest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the country by deploying a temporary mobile site called a COLT (Cell on Light Truck). There are 175,000 people expected to attend the weekend outdoor festival.
A COLT is a self-contained mobile cell site designed specifically for rapid and short-term network response. It enhances wireless coverage so that Verizon Wireless customers can make more calls; send more text and picture messages; and download games, music and sports news.
COLT deployed June 26, 2008.
The COLT is located in Riverfront Park.
Verizon Wireless uses mobile cell sites to enhance its network when there is a natural disaster or other event that calls for additional cell coverage and capacity. So far this year, Verizon Wireless has deployed mobile cell sites and other equipment to more than a dozen emergencies around the country as well as many special events.
Verizon Wireless has invested more than $106 million in its Washington network in 2007 and more than $730 million over the past seven years.
In addition to its fleet of mobile equipment, Verizon Wireless' nationwide network reliability is supported by industry-leading redundancy and maintenance measures. This has proven particularly valuable during natural disasters and other emergencies.
Standard Verizon Wireless network-reliability features include battery back-up power at all facilities as well as generators installed at all switching facilities and many cell site locations.
