DURHAM, NC — Several Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in the Triangle area will collect school supplies for underprivileged children whose parents are unable to obtain the necessary supplies for the 2008-2009 school year. The donated school supplies will fill the backpacks of the children expected to attend the 10th Annual Durham Rescue Mission Back to School Party to be held Tuesday, August 19, at the Men's Campus of the Durham Rescue Mission (1201 E Main St, Durham, NC 27701).

From July 1 — July 31, the Durham Rescue Mission is asking the community to donate new colored pencils, erasers, markers, pencils and pens and to bring these items to any of the following four Verizon Wireless stores serving as drop-off locations:

Last year, the Durham Rescue Mission donated over 2,500 backpacks filled with school supplies to children, with the help of GlaxoSmithKline, a long-time supporter of the Durham Rescue Mission's 'Back to School Party. Participants were served lunch and families had the opportunity to select clothing and stock up on groceries.

"This event continues to be more successful each year, and we hope that this year will be the best yet," said Ernie C. Mills, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Durham Rescue Mission. "Our goal, as always, is to provide children with the tools they need to get excited about going back to school, which will be possible in large part due to these generous companies and the public."
