BASKING RIDGE, NJ — For the eighth consecutive year, Verizon Wireless has been named one of the 2008 Working Mother 100 Best Companies.

Verizon Wireless, the only wireless carrier to be honored by Working Mother as an employer of choice for working families, invests in unique programs and benefits to meet the needs of all employees and their families. Verizon Wireless provides work/life initiatives to its employees that include flexible work arrangements; adoption assistance; child care discounts; a prenatal exercise program; the Healthy Babies program, which helps improve employee quality of life throughout pregnancy and after childbirth; and the Backup Care program, which provides employees with access to backup caregivers for children, adult/elderly dependents and spouses/domestic partners.

“We know that working parents have to balance two very important and often demanding roles,” said Martha Delehanty, vice president – human resources for Verizon Wireless. “Supporting families is a vital part of our culture, which is why we invest in programs and tools to help all employees balance their professional and personal lives.”

“The economy is not going to alter the commitment of Verizon Wireless to working mothers because the company has made family-friendly policies a part of its corporate DNA,” said Carol Evans, chief executive officer, Working Mother Media.

Added Suzanne Riss, editor in chief of Working Mother magazine, “Verizon Wireless knows that its investment pays for itself through employee loyalty, and the company realizes that productivity depends as much on satisfied staffers as on smart processes. By helping employees manage their work/life demands, Verizon Wireless is creating a highly motivated workforce.”

Verizon Wireless was selected for the 2008 Working Mother 100 Best Companies based on an extensive application with more than 500 questions. The application included detailed questions about workforce, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and more. It also checked the usage, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them. Seven areas were measured and scored: workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs and company culture. For this year’s 100 Best, particular weight was given to family-friendly policies, flexibility, leave policies and benefits for part-timers.
