SPRINGFIELD, MO — Verizon Wireless today announced that it will donate an additional $1,000 to the Family Violence Center to help the agency purchase food for women and children at the center. Verizon Wireless previously donated $2,500 to the center in early 2008 when it opened its first Verizon Wireless retail store in Springfield.

“We rely heavily on donations and grants to operate our center and provide a safe haven for women and children who are victims of domestic violence,” said Pat Reiser, president and chief executive officer of the Family Violence Center. “When Verizon Wireless opened its store in Springfield earlier this year, one of the first donations they made was to the Family Violence Center. Their continued support and generosity in making an additional donation of $1,000 has enabled us to purchase needed food and supplies for our center,” Reiser said.

The Family Violence Center, Inc. is the oldest and largest domestic violence shelter in Missouri and provides shelter, advocacy and education to victims of domestic violence and promotes the principles that all individuals have the right to a life free from abuse. Funding for programs and services comes from grants, donations and planned gifts.

Verizon Wireless is a leader in providing assistance to domestic violence agencies and organizations across Missouri and the United States. Since 2001, the company’s HopeLine® national phone recycling and reuse program has collected more than 5.3 million phones; awarded more than $5.6 million in cash grants to domestic violence agencies and organizations throughout the country; and by the end of this year, will have donated more than 80,000 HopeLine phones with 240 million minutes of airtime to victims, survivors and domestic violence organizations.
