ALBANY, NY — Verizon Wireless announced today that it has activated the third of 13 planned sites that will eventually close a more-than-50-mile coverage gap along Interstate 87 — the Northway — between Albany and Plattsburgh. The new site in Lake George will provide coverage along I-87 from the Village of Warrensburg to the Village of Chestertown, along Route 9 from the Village of Lake George to Warrensburg, and in the Village of Lake George itself. An additional site in Lake George has also been activated, improving coverage and capacity in the main shopping district in the village, on Canada Street, and in the area of Million Dollar Beach. The site will also improve coverage along the Northway from Lake George to Warrensburg. These two sites join previously activated sites in North Hudson and Lewis to improve coverage along the Northway. A site in Schroon Falls is under construction and is expected to be operational in January.

"We continue to make good progress closing the wireless coverage gap along the Northway," said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless' Upstate New York region. "We're moving forward on the remaining sites in this project and are committed to getting them built and in service as quickly as we can."

The Northway project is part of the more than $100 million the company invested in its Upstate New York region network in 2008 — the eighth consecutive year the company invested more than $100 million in the region. This brings Verizon Wireless' total network investment in Upstate New York to more than $1 billion since 2000.
