SOUTHFIELD, MI — Verizon Wireless has upgraded equipment on its existing Mackinac Island cell sites, thereby doubling voice and data capacity on the Island for the Detroit Regional Chamber Mackinac Policy Conference, Wednesday, May 27, through Saturday, May 30. The upgrades will enable more customers to use their wireless phones, PDAs and laptops with wireless modems concurrently to make calls; send and receive e-mail and text, picture and video messages; and access the Internet, while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.

"Each year, this high-profile conference attracts the state's top political, business and community leaders from across the state," said Greg Haller, president—Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. "These individuals are willing to forego motorized transportation for the four-day conference, but most are not willing to give up their cell phones, PDAs and wireless modems. We know that getting through on the first try and maintaining a connection are important to these customers, and our network enhancements reflect our ongoing commitment to network reliability."

These improvements are part of Verizon Wireless' continual effort to expand coverage, improve capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Michigan and throughout the country. Verizon Wireless has invested more than $50 billion since it was formed-$5.5 billion on average every year-to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Since the company was formed in 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested $1.2 billion on improvements to its network in Michigan.
