JACKSONVILLE, FL — Thanks to a new Verizon Wireless advanced digital cell site in Nassau County, wireless services will be stronger and more reliable than ever for local businesses, residents and travelers near the Florida-Georgia border.

Verizon Wireless, which operates the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless network, recently activated the new site in the northwest area of Nassau County.

The site utilizes the most advanced 3G high-speed wireless network (EV-DO Rev. A), which allows customers to enjoy clearer call reception and faster speeds when sending text or multimedia messages. This advanced network also complements the latest wireless services, such as V CAST – which allows customers to stream video clips, play cutting-edge 3D games and download full song tracks over the air; VZ Navigator(SM) – a location-based service offering maps, audible driving directions, traffic updates, gas station locations and pricing; and the newest, most reliable Push To Talk technology.

In addition, customers using the company’s Mobile Broadband data service to wirelessly access their e-mail and calendars, the Internet and other information, can expect average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps.

The new site is part of the company’s continuing investment to expand coverage, increase capacity and enhance quality of its voice and data network throughout the country. Verizon Wireless has invested nearly $2 billion in its Florida network since the company was formed.

Other network projects include upgrading and reconfiguring more than 700 cell sites and several large switching facilities in Florida formerly owned by Alltel Wireless, so they will work as part of the larger and more advanced Verizon Wireless EV-DO Rev A network.

In addition to network infrastructure assimilation, Verizon Wireless also is progressing in the integration of retail operations and customer billing for former Alltel customers.

Verizon Wireless completed its acquisition of Alltel in January and is the operator of the nation’s largest wireless voice and data network, now serving more than 87 million customers across the country.
