DALLAS — Verizon Wireless is launching a North Texas HopeLine® drive to collect no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories to benefit victims of domestic violence as part of the 4th annual Verizon Foundation Domestic Violence Prevention Summit. The annual event takes place Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at 221 East Las Colinas Blvd., in Irving, Texas.

The Verizon Wireless HopeLine program accepts wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any carrier at Communications Stores nationwide. North Texas residents are encouraged to drop off their phone donations at their local Verizon Wireless store. Donating old phone to HopeLine will assist local domestic violence advocacy agencies working to end the cycle of abuse in the Dallas/Fort Worth community. If you are unable to visit a store, simply mail the phone using a postage-paid label from the Verizon Wireless Web site www.verizonwireless.com/hopelinemailinglabel.

Phones given to HopeLine that can be refurbished are sold for reuse, and those that are not salvageable are recycled in an environmentally sound way under a zero landfill policy. Proceeds generated from the sale of the refurbished phones are put toward wireless phones and service for survivors of domestic violence as well as financial grants to non-profit domestic violence organizations.

Since October of 2001 when Verizon Wireless launched HopeLine, its national phone recycling and reuse program, the company has collected more than 6 million no-old wireless phones and turned them into nearly $7 million in cash grants to support domestic violence victims. “Domestic violence impacts all of us – at home, work or in our community. We are proud to participate in the summit as we shine a light on this important issue,” said Frank Antonacci, region president for Verizon Wireless. “We hope all of North Texas will join us as we work to make a difference locally. Donating an old cell phone is a simple act that can make a profound difference in the life of a domestic violence victim.”

This year’s summit, titled “Engaging Communities to Help End Domestic Violence,” will showcase strategies and solutions that encourage positive community teamwork, and promote healthy relationships.

Among those speaking at summit are: Craig Watkins, district attorney, Dallas county; the honorable Roberto Canas, Jr., presiding judge, Dallas County Criminal Court No. 10; actor Victor Rivers, of the NBC series Life; State Sen. Jane Nelson; Paige Flink, executive director of The Family Place; and Hind Jarrah, president of the Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation. Dr. Ron Anderson, president and CEO of Parkland Health and Hospital System, will serve as the keynote speaker of the event.

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its free educational Web site, Thinkfinity.org, and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence.
