BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless Vice President and General Counsel Steven E. Zipperstein made the following statement today about a letter sent to Verizon Wireless by U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) on wireless service pricing options:

“Early termination fees (ETFs) are optional. As the first wireless service provider to pro-rate ETFs, starting in 2006, we remain determined to offer great choices in getting service with Verizon Wireless.

“Verizon Wireless customers do not have to have an ETF at all if they do not want one. ETFs allow customers to have it either way: no ETF with full retail for a device, or a greatly discounted device with an ETF.

“A variety of incredible new handsets – real wireless mini computers – together with service plan choices, provide customers with choice on how they get wireless service from us. Whether customers want prepaid service, contract service with subsidized handsets, or just want to purchase non-subsidized handsets off the shelf, there’s a plan for that.

“The vast majority of our customers have chosen the contract model with subsidized handsets, which provides great value by affording many with the opportunity to buy state-of-the-art wireless devices for prices well below wholesale. This model has contributed to the widespread adoption of mobile devices across all segments of consumers.”
