TAMPA, FL — When big league ballplayers and crowds of baseball fans from across the country report for Spring Training 2010 over the next few weeks, they’ll have the top power hitter of 3G wireless services batting for them in cities across Florida.

Verizon Wireless, which operates the nation’s most reliable and largest voice and 3G data network, has invested more than $240 million in network enhancements in Florida since last season to further boost its league-leading, high-speed coverage and services.

These improvements include adding cell sites in various Grapefruit League cities, upgrading hardware and software at other cell sites and large switching facilities, installing in-building systems at numerous Spring Training-area hotels, and making other enhancements. In addition, real-life test men and women – on whom the iconic Verizon Wireless spokesperson is based – have driven thousands of miles across the state to thoroughly test the company’s network in preparation for Spring Training.

This leading 3G network allows customers to make voice calls; send text and picture messages; download music, games, videos and applications; surf the Internet; and enjoy other advanced services reliably at broadband speeds.

“Like the best hitters in baseball, Verizon Wireless works year-round to keep improving,” said Frank Wise, Florida executive network director. “And our network teams are always thinking a few pitches ahead to provide customers with the most powerful services.”

In 2010, Verizon Wireless plans to launch its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network – which will offer higher wireless speeds and reliability than even today’s most advanced 3G network – in 25 to 30 markets nationally. These markets have not been identified, but recent network enhancements in Florida have been made to prepare the network for the eventual rollout of 4G LTE technology.
