BASKING RIDGE, NJ — U.S. Senators Joseph Lieberman (ID-Conn.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) today introduced The First Responders Protection Act of 2010 to provide resources to the nation’s public safety community for building an interoperable wireless network.

Verizon Wireless Vice President and General Counsel Steve Zipperstein supported the legislation with this statement:

“Our nation’s public safety officers can do their jobs best when they can communicate with each other over wireless telecommunications systems that are fully interoperable. The First Responders Protection Act of 2010, introduced by Senators Lieberman and McCain, addresses the three critical issues that will bring interoperable wireless broadband services to public safety: spectrum, funding and governance. We wholeheartedly endorse this approach, which directly allocates spectrum to public safety for building out a national, interoperable wireless network and provides the funding required to build that network.

“As President Obama, the FCC and Congressional leaders work to bring an additional 500 MHz of spectrum to market for commercial innovation, open auctions will maximize dollars to the U.S. Treasury while providing the financial resources public safety will need to build out dedicated, interoperable wireless networks. By dedicating just 10 MHz of D-block spectrum – two percent of the 500 MHz total – to public safety, we give emergency service providers the resources they need to do their jobs right.”
