LEXINGTON, KY — Verizon Wireless will increase its data capacity by more than 550 percent and its voice capacity by 600 percent around the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington to accommodate an expected crowd of 250,000 people during the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, Sept. 25 through Oct. 10.

To boost capacity for those attending the games, the company will deploy two temporary cell sites (Cells on Light Trucks or COLTs). The COLTs are fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell sites that enhance wireless capacity in a specific location and work especially well in dense areas with large crowds. The enhancements empower more Verizon Wireless customers to rely on their wireless phones for social networking, Internet browsing, downloading apps, exchanging e-mail and text, picture and video messaging as well as making calls.

“Based on usage at other major sporting events, such as the Kentucky Derby and even the Super Bowl, we know that attendees of the World Equestrian Games will be relying on their wireless devices to share the events as they are happening,” said John E. Granby, president Kentucky/Indiana/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. “Deploying these COLTs helps ensure our customers’ experience on our network is seamless regardless of whether they use their phones to talk, text or tweet.”

The network enhancements are part of Verizon Wireless’ continual effort to expand coverage, improve capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Kentucky and throughout the country. Verizon Wireless has invested more than $60 billion since it was formed $5.7 billion on average every year to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $307 million on improvements to its wireless network in Kentucky.
