BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless today introduced the Verizon Developer Community (VDC) Power Your App contest for mobile applications developers. Developers are invited to visit www.poweryourappcontest.com to enter their most innovative, consumer-friendly and business-savvy apps in the contest.

The categories for the contest were determined by surveying wireless customers to find out what kinds of applications are most appealing to them and to identify applications they would be most likely to purchase and use. The VDC Power Your App categories are:

  • Connections – social networking, instant messaging, personalization
  • Entertainment – movies and TV, video
  • Lifestyle – shopping, fitness and health, travel and navigation
  • Business – productivity, utilities, money management
  • Information – education, news, weather, sports, leisure

Developers are encouraged to be creative, and winning applications will highlight the wide range of activities, information, entertainment and productivity tools developers can bring to mobile phones. Contest entries must work on either Android or RIM platforms.

“This contest is a great way for any developer to show off their most interesting and appealing apps, not to mention has the potential for tremendous financial and other rewards,” said Todd Murphy, director, Verizon Developer Community. “This year’s contest draws on consumer research, and we’re hopeful that developers will use that information to inform the apps they want to submit, not only for this contest, but for V CAST Apps overall.”

Members of the VDC will choose the category winners and the Verizon Developer Community People’s Choice winner, the app that receives the most votes among the category winners, from among the applications submitted. The Grand Prize winner will be chosen by Verizon Wireless customers, and will take home $50,000; 200 percent of the application’s revenue for a year (to a maximum of actual revenue plus $100,000); among other prizes. The winners will be announced in February 2011.
