DAYTONA BEACH, FL — Verizon Wireless, which operates the nation’s fastest and most advanced 4G network and largest and most reliable 3G network, is turbo-charging its high-speed digital services for visiting motorsports fans, news media and local area residents and businesses during Daytona 500 activities February 14 through February 20.

The company will roll in a high-tech 3G COW (Cells On Wheels) outside of Daytona International Speedway – with a 75-foot telescoping antenna, eight dedicated voice channels and three high-speed data channels – as well as a 3G cell site on a trailer with the same capabilities. The units will boost the already speedy and strong Verizon Wireless network throughout Volusia County and Florida, while more than 200,000 on-site race fans and worldwide journalists make calls, send text and picture messages and access the internet on their wireless phones, tablets, laptops and other devices.

Verizon Wireless also has installed in-building 3G systems to boost service in a variety of hotels and other destinations hosting events related to the big race, and has activated and upgraded numerous cell sites around Daytona Beach in recent months to reliably handle increased network demand.

“For major events such as the Daytona 500, we’ll roll in 3G COWs or other equipment to ensure the network performs at top strength and speed,” said Frank Wise, executive network director for the Verizon Wireless Florida region. “But really, we are enhancing our network every day so Florida customers always will experience the most advanced and reliable services.”

In the past year, Verizon Wireless has launched its 4G LTE mobile broadband network in numerous Florida markets, with the entire state scheduled to be covered by 2013. Its high-speed 3G network already serves 98 percent of Florida’s landmass and population.

Since the company formed in 2000, more than $2.2 billion has been spent to keep enhancing Verizon Wireless coverage and services for customers in the state. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $65 billion to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services.
