KNOXVILLE, TN — Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee received an outpouring of support after a flood spoiled food in its warehouse, and now Knoxville workers are helping to ensure the restoration process continues by volunteering time and money.

A group of employees from the Verizon Wireless stores in Turkey Creek and North Knoxville decided to hold in-store food drives from March 11 to April 10 to help replenish the food bank’s supply.

“When you see a need like this in the community, you automatically start thinking of ways you can personnally help,” said Jeremy Long, retail sales manager at the Turkey Creek Verizon Wireless Communications store. “We’re partnering with our customers to hold this food drive, and several of our employees will be leading a team of volunteers to help in the Second Harvest warehouse once the facility can be opened again.”

In addition to the food drive, the Verizon stores will also donate $500 to Second Harvest to aid in its recovery process. The warehouse on Delaware Avenue in North Knoxville was flooded Feb. 28 after the creek behind it overflowed. The food reserves stored in the warehouse were ruined, and both the warehouse and administrative offices have been closed indefinitely.
