SAVANNAH, GA — To ensure its customers have flawless wireless service during the 187th St. Patrick's Day parade and festivities in Savannah, Ga., Verizon Wireless has added more than 30 lease lines and three broadband radio channels to enhance data speeds along the parade route.
In recent years, the company has seen dramatic increases in data usage and text messages during the parade. Typical parade Short Message Service (SMS) traffic is more than 230 percent higher than Verizon's current busy hour. For this year's event, the company is anticipating more than 100,000 text messages per hour. Over the past two years, the company's average daily data traffic around the parade route has increased approximately 300 percent.
"We're excited to be participating in this historic event again. As the second largest St. Patrick's Day gathering in the United States, it's always a great time with the Savannah community and the visitors who have traveled from all over the world to join the festivities," says Jeff Mango, president, Verizon Wireless Georgia/Alabama Region. "During events such as this, we experience tremendous spikes in data usage. To make sure our network is ready for the increase in traffic, our network team in the Savannah area has been working diligently to increase capacity to meet that demand."
Parade Day Activities
For the fifth consecutive year, Verizon Wireless is a presenting sponsor of the renowned St. Patrick's Celebration on the River event, which features entertainment, food, beverages, games, contests and more on the historic Savannah waterfront. As part of the festivities, the company will host an interactive area for visitors to demo and purchase the latest wireless devices and accessories including the new Verizon iPhone 4, Motorola Xoom tablets and the hottest must-have applications. There will also be two themed photo booths where guests can get their pictures taken with themed photo overlays. For attending rock stars, Verizon also is hosting a live karaoke stage.
