ALBANY, NY — Verizon Wireless announced today that it is bringing the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to Albany by the end of the year. Customers in Albany will join wireless users in 40 other major markets that are already experiencing the fastest, most advanced 4G mobile network in America. Verizon Wireless plans to offer 4G LTE in more than 145 metropolitan areas by the end of the year.

The company also announced today that Syracuse and Ithaca will be included in this next phase of its 4G LTE deployment. The technology was deployed in Rochester as part of the initial 4G LTE national rollout in December.

“4G LTE is a true game-changer for business and consumer wireless customers alike. It will change the way people think about and use wireless technology,” said Russ Preite, president of Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region. “Imagine being able to conduct a real-time video conference from a handheld device or to play high-resolution multi-player games from virtually anywhere. That’s what’s possible with 4G LTE technology. We’re excited to bring it to our Albany-area customers.”

Since its launch fewer than four months ago, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with 4G LTE modems with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

The HTC ThunderBolt™, launched Thursday, March 17, is the first in a suite of consumer-oriented smartphones, tablets, hotspots and notebooks that will run on Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network by the middle of this year. The new consumer devices join two USB modems for laptops from Pantech and LG in transforming the wireless experience, offering consumers new ways to connect and share their lives at blazingly fast speeds.

Verizon Wireless’ 700 MHz spectrum gives the company specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license. The company is building its 4G LTE network with the same commitment to performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized. Verizon Wireless’ consistent focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year.
