WORCESTER, MA — Verizon Wireless today announced plans to bring the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to several cities and towns in central Massachusetts by the end of the year. Customers in and around Worcester, Massachusetts will eventually join wireless users in 40 other major markets that are already experiencing the fastest, most advanced 4G mobile network in America. The company plans to offer 4G LTE in more than 145 metropolitan areas by the end of 2011.

“By year’s end, we plan to introduce and extend our 4G LTE network to 11 cities and towns across central Massachusetts,” said Christine Berberich, regional president for Verizon Wireless New England. “Customers in the greater Worcester area can look forward to accessing the country’s fastest 4G mobile technology. With speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G, our 4G LTE network will deliver extraordinary mobile productivity and on-the-go entertainment to our central Massachusetts customers.”

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network expansions throughout central Massachusetts are expected to reach the following communities by the end of 2011:

  • Auburn
  • Bolton
  • Grafton
  • Milford
  • Millbury
  • Northboro
  • Paxton
  • Shrewsbury
  • Southboro
  • Westboro
  • Worcester

The HTC ThunderBolt™, launched on March 17, is the first in a suite of consumer-oriented smartphones, tablets, hotspots and notebooks that will run on Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network. The new consumer devices join two USB modems from Pantech and LG in transforming the wireless experience, offering consumers new ways to connect and share their lives at blazingly fast speeds.

Since its launch fewer than four months ago, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with 4G LTE modems with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

Verizon Wireless’ 700 MHz spectrum gives the company specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license. The company is building its 4G LTE network with the same commitment to performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized. Verizon Wireless’ consistent focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year.
