WASHINGTON, D.C. — Representatives Joe Barton (R-Tex) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.) released letters today (April 28) related to their inquiry into the privacy policies of wireless carriers, as well as others in the wireless industry. The following statement should be attributed to Peter Davidson, Verizon senior vice president of federal government relations:

“We commend Representatives Barton and Markey for addressing the issue of consumer privacy in the wireless marketplace. Verizon has long had strong, transparent consumer privacy and data protection policies in place.

“All participants in the wireless ecosystem, including third-party-applications developers, device manufacturers and operating system providers, must also bear responsibility for informing customers about their privacy and data protection policies. While the new, open wireless environment has created a great opportunity for third parties to sell directly to wireless consumers, with that opportunity comes the responsibility to do so openly and honestly.”
