BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Time is running out for runners, walkers and all health enthusiasts in Morris County to register for the 2011 Verizon Corporate Classic 5K event, the county’s largest fitness event of the season. The annual event is being held on Thursday, July 14, 2011, at 7:30 pm in downtown Morristown.

This is the sixth year the annual Corporate Classic 5K event has been sponsored by Verizon, and will feature a $10,000 donation from HopeLine® by Verizon, the company’s community relations program dedicated to domestic violence awareness and prevention, to Jersey Battered Women’s Shelter. The Verizon Corporate Classic 5K event is open to corporate teams as well as individual runners and walkers, including students, area residents and their friends and families. Interested participants may register online at www.verizonwirelessclassic.com or call 973-898-9386.

“The Verizon Corporate Classic is a great way to bring together co-workers and members of the community for an evening of fun and wellness while also giving back to a very worthy local non-profit organization focused on the prevention and awareness of domestic violence,” said Nancy Clark, president, Northeast Area, Verizon Wireless. “We want to thank everyone who has supported this important cause in the past, and we hope to make this year’s event the most successful one yet.”

Spaces are filling up, so register today! Close to 4,000 participants have already registered and the registration will close once the limit of 4,500 runners is reached. All company team entries need to be submitted by Friday, July 8 at 7:00PM, and individual online entries are accepted until Monday, July 11 at 7:00PM. Individuals will be able to register in person on July 12 and 13 at the Morristown Running Company (31 South Street, Morristown). Race-day entries will be accepted only if capacity has not been reached at the race site, Pioneer Park of Headquarters Plaza, between noon and 6:00PM.

Through HopeLine, Verizon Wireless collects no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider. The phones are then refurbished or recycled in an environmentally sound way. Refurbished phones, pre-programmed to dial 911 in case of an emergency, are donated along with 3,000 minutes of wireless service to local domestic violence organizations, local government officials and law enforcement agencies for use with their domestic violence clients. Verizon Wireless was the first wireless carrier in the nation to collect and recycle used cell phones, and has done so on behalf of survivors of domestic violence since January 1999 – first in New York and then across the U.S. For store locations and to learn how to donate a phone using a postage-paid mailing label, visit www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.

Jersey Battered Women’s Service, is a non-profit organization in Morris County that provides a range of life-saving and life-rebuilding services to victims of domestic violence and their families.

For the past 22 years, Morristown has hosted an annual footrace for employee teams from New Jersey corporations. Verizon has sponsored the race since 2006 as part of its commitment to employee health and wellness. The company operates 43 in-house Health and Wellness Centers throughout the country to provide Verizon employees with fitness equipment and health programs, including nutrition, smoking cessation classes, aerobics, yoga classes, flu shots, mammography screenings and more.

“As of now, we have 1,378 Verizon employees and family members registered, a true testimonial of our corporate culture to promote employee health and wellness,” said Mark Monteyne, national fitness center head coach for Verizon Wireless.
