EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA — As widespread power outages continue along North Carolina’s East Coast in the aftermath of devastating storms over the weekend, Verizon Wireless has set up mobile communication resources at Red Cross shelters in Rocky Mount and Washington Counties to help area residents contact family, friends and loved ones.

The mobile communication centers are equipped with fully functional devices, so residents without working cell phones can contact family, friends and loved ones free of charge from the company’s pool of working handsets. Additionally, the centers feature Internet connectivity and a battery charging station that allow customers to charge their cell phones and smartphones. Verizon Wireless has mobile communication centers set up at:

  • Englewood Baptist Church, 1350 South Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC
  • Washington High School, 400 Slate Stone Road, Washington, NC

In addition to the wireless communication centers, a Wireless Experience Center is set up outside of the New Bern Verizon Wireless retail store and is available for residents in the area. This thirty-five foot trailer comes equipped with fifty charging ports to enable community members to charge their wireless devices in the case of power outages or residential displacement. Nine sit-down stations are also available and equipped with internet connectivity and cell phones to enable residents of storm-stricken areas to call loved ones and take care of personal business. Two external LCD screens and satellite connections allow these centers to stream weather information and emergency response information to residents. The WEC is located at 2011 S Glenburnie Rd, New Bern NC 28562.
