NEW ORLEANS, LA — With Tropical Storm Lee projected to make landfall near Louisiana in the coming days, Verizon Wireless encourages Gulf Coast residents to plan now for the tropical depression, and the remaining days of the 2011 storm season:

  • Keep wireless phone batteries fully charged – in case local power is lost – well before warnings are issued.
  • Have a backup battery handy, in the event you cannot get to a local Verizon Wireless communications store for a complementary post-storm charge.
  • Program emergency phone numbers into your phone – police, fire, and rescue agencies; insurance providers; family, friends and co-workers; etc.
  • Consider purchasing your own personal mobile hotspot – like the MiFi 4510– to have 4G access to the internet even if power outages occur.
  • Forward your home phone calls to your wireless number if you will be away from your home or have to evacuate.
  • Remember applications that can make communication and disaster recovery efforts quick and easy.Examples include:
    • Skype Mobile – Make free local and international Skype-to-Skype calls on your Verizon Wireless smart phone to update loved ones on your location and status.
    • Google Maps – Find the nearest hotel, restaurant or gas station that can provide comfort and convenience in the wake of a storm.

When a storm strikes or threatens the area:

  • Voice-Enabled Texting/Searching – Consumers should never text and drive. Instead, use Google Voice to deliver important messages if you must drive in severe weather or during an evacuation. A free application available on select devices, Google voice allows any person to use the app on any phone (no pre-recording necessary). Also, utilize Google voice to search the web browser on your device and call your contacts.
  • Flashlight – In the event of a power outage during or after a storm, turn your mobile phone into a flashlight with this simple app.
  • Text Plus – Keep-in-touch with family and friends easier during a storm with this group chat application. With unlimited texts, Text Plus allows you to create communities and connect with wireless users on any provider.
  • Power Save Mode Toggle – Conserve the life of your battery with this helpful app. When your battery is low the “power save mode” is automatically triggered and extends the battery’s life.

“Preparation is vital for staying safe in emergencies,” said Kay Henze - president, Houston/Gulf Coast Region, Verizon Wireless. “Likewise, our teams work all year to prepare, plan, invest in our network and make sure our wireless network stays strong for customers when they need it most.”
