TAMPA, FL — To punctuate national Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October), the Verizon Foundation and the Verizon HopeLine program have awarded more than $250,000 in grants to various Florida organizations in a broad effort to help victims of domestic abuse.

The organizations range from domestic violence shelters, universities, community groups and others across the state. The grants support programs that aid victims, educate potential abusers, raise awareness in the workplace, engage law enforcement and provide resources to numerous other initiatives.

“Domestic violence is a too common and often complicated issue here in Florida and around the nation,” said Pam Tope, Florida region president of Verizon Wireless. “We’re proud that the Verizon Foundation and our HopeLine program can help many of the organizations that do so much good for our families, friends and neighbors.”

Grant highlights include $50,000 to the Institute for Family Violence Studies at Florida State University, which has created a first-of-its-kind collaboration with Florida's criminal justice community to prevent and reduce domestic violence in law enforcement families.

A grant of $20,000 was awarded to Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University (FAMU) to implement a program based on innovative research called the Violence Interruption Process, to recognize, resist, and change potentially abusive attitudes, situations, and behaviors.

Michelle Robinson, Southeast region president for Verizon Communications, said “These initiatives and organizations provide creative, caring and critical services directly to Floridians – our employees, friends and neighbors – who need them most. It’s a privilege to be able to provide them with resources and support during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and throughout the year.”

Other grant recipients include:

-- Taking Action Against Domestic Violence initiative with WFTS Ch-28 in Tampa

-- Refuge House in Tallahassee

-- Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network in Gainesville

Florida residents can participate in the Verizon HopeLine program all year by dropping a no-longer-used wireless phone into collection bins at every Verizon Wireless store. The phones are then refurbished and/or recycled to benefit domestic violence agencies and victims. For more information, visit www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, uses its technology, financial resources and partnerships to address critical social issues, with a focus on education and domestic violence prevention. In 2010, the foundation awarded nearly $67 million to nonprofit agencies in the U.S. and abroad. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation’s largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered nearly 6 million hours of community service since 2000.
