NORTH PLATTE, NE — North Platte area parents are invited to attend a free educational workshop which will provide them with the information they need to help their children develop responsible wireless habits. The Smart Phone ParentingSM workshop will be held at Mid Plains Community College, 601 West State Road, North Platte, Neb., on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. The workshop, which is free and open to the public, will be taught by local wireless experts.

Developed by Verizon Wireless, the workshops are part of the Smart Phone Parenting Program which offers research-based information about wireless usage and safety guidelines. The workshops address topics such as how to know if a child is ready for their first cell phone, how to choose the right device and plan, safeguard services such as usage controls, the language of text messaging, how to establish family guidelines and more.

“The Smart Phone Parenting Program provides parents with the knowledge base and framework to make informed wireless decisions and effectively communicate with their children about smart and safe choices when it comes to wireless usage,” said Seamus Hyland, president—Great Plains Region, for Verizon Wireless. “The classroom setting allows parents to ask questions and practice what they learn through hands-on demonstrations.”

A recent study conducted by Verizon Wireless found that most parents provide phones for kids when they are between the ages of 13 – 15. However, nearly 10 percent provided a phone for children between 7 and 9 years old. In addition, while more than 95 percent of parents choose to get their child a wireless device for safety reasons, one in five hasn’t set up rules for their kids’ wireless usage.

In addition to the workshops, Verizon Wireless also created an educational website, www.smartphoneparenting.com, for parents to find complete survey results, additional information and resources to help them manage their wireless accounts. Registration for the North Platte workshop is available on the web site at www.smartphoneparenting.com/workshoplocations.
