MADISON, WI — Verizon Wireless has activated three new 4G LTE cell sites in Madison which enhance coverage for America’s fastest and most reliable 4G network around the University of Wisconsin campus north of Campus Drive to Lake Mendota and between the Eagles Heights area in the west and Frances Street in the east.

The new cell sites, each of which is equipped with a permanent backup generator for times of emergency, empower more Verizon Wireless users with 4G LTE smartphones, laptop modems, hotspots and tablets to take advantage of blazing fast speeds for social networking, Internet browsing, downloading apps, exchanging email and text, gaming, and video messaging. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

“Our customers rely on their wireless devices for virtually all of their communication needs,” said T.J. Fox, region president, Verizon Wireless. “But today it’s about more than just talking, it’s about connecting, through a text message, email or social networking site. And the ability to access information and send data quickly and reliably is always important on a college campus. Our 4G LTE network allows customers to connect faster and more fully, no matter how they want to use their wireless device.”

Verizon Wireless introduced its 4G LTE network in late 2010 and it currently covers more than 186 million Americans, more than half the population. As of mid-November, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network hit 179 markets nationwide, with at least 185 markets expected to be covered by the end of 2011. In Wisconsin, Verizon Wireless has already launched 4G LTE high-speed services in Appleton, Green Bay, Kenosha, Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Racine and Wisconsin Dells. Verizon Wireless has invested more than $65 billion since it was formed—$6 billion on average every year—to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $435.9 million on improvements to its wireless network in Wisconsin, including $84.1 million in 2010.
