BEAVERTON, OR — Millions of Americans got their first smartphone over the holidays and 44 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, compared to 18 percent just two years ago, according to Nielsen. Customers who have upgraded to a smartphone, switched to a new device or are looking for more information about specific operating systems in Eugene have the opportunity to get answers to their questions and become more savvy about new technology at Wireless Workshops from Verizon.

More than 28,000 customers nationwide have participated in the workshops (both online and in stores) since last spring. Customers can attend the in-person workshops at the Eugene Verizon Wireless Communications store at 485 Coburg Road. Android basic workshops will take place on January 28 from 8 – 9:30 a.m., and the Apple iPhone 4S workshop will take place on January 28 from 8 – 9:30 a.m.

Reports from Nielsen and ChangeWave Research also indicate:

  • 64% of 25-34 year olds own a smartphone
  • 53% of 18-24 year olds own a smartphone
  • 47% of 35-54 year olds own a smartphone (up from 19% in ’09)
  • 25% of those 55 and older own a smartphone (up from 10% in ’09)
  • 51% of smartphone owners are female

“People of all ages are realizing how a smartphone is an important tool that adds value and organization to their daily routines,” said Bobby Morrison, president –Pacific Northwest region at Verizon Wireless. “These free wireless workshops help our customers unlock the benefits of their wireless device, and have the best 3G or 4G experience on the Verizon Wireless network.”

The workshops are led by Verizon Wireless’ specially trained data experts and sales representatives who are steeped in the details of all operating systems on smartphones, tablets and a variety of other devices at Verizon Wireless stores and run between one and two hours in length. In addition to in-store workshops, the company offers many of the same workshops online in English as well as some in Spanish on-demand at www.verizonwireless.com/workshops.

Customers can also attend live online Q&A sessions where Verizon Wireless representatives answer participants’ questions about devices and operating systems. A list of upcoming online Q&A sessions is available on the Wireless Workshops website.
