ROCHESTER, NY — Verizon Wireless has activated 23 new 4G LTE cell sites throughout the Rochester area, expanding and enhancing coverage on the high-speed wireless data network the company launched locally and nationwide in 2010. Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network is the only 4G LTE network available in the Rochester area. It’s available in 195 major markets across the United States, including nine in New York State, covering more than 200 million people. The company’s 4G LTE rollout is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2013.

The network enhancements were part of nearly $158 million the company invested in its Upstate New York wireless network in 2011.

“Our continued aggressive expansion of our 4G LTE network means Rochester’s fastest and most reliable high-speed wireless data network is getting even more robust,” said Russ Preite, president of Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region. “And we’re far from finished. We will continue to expand our 4G LTE coverage locally and across the country, allowing our customers to connect faster and with greater capability, no matter how they use their wireless devices.”

Verizon Wireless added 4G LTE to sites in the following areas:

  • Rochester
  • Brighton
  • Pittsford
  • Gates
  • Greece
  • Charlotte
  • Farmington
  • Geneseo
  • Manchester
  • Henrietta
  • Churchville
  • Phelps
  • (more)

The rapid rollout of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network in Upstate New York means that more than 60 percent of the region’s population is now covered by this advanced wireless technology.

In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless customers will be able to use their 4G LTE smartphones, tablets, notebooks, laptop modems and mobile hotspots to experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink – perfect for surfing the Web, streaming video, and downloading large files wirelessly.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network was named the ‘Fastest 4G Network Yet’ by Popular Science’s Best of What’s New awards and ranked No. 1 on PC World’s 100 Best Products of 2011.

As the first wireless company in the world to broadly deploy game-changing 4G LTE technology, Verizon Wireless is committed to building its 4G network with the same performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized. Verizon Wireless’ consistent focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year. The company’s 700 MHz spectrum gives Verizon Wireless specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license.
