DENVER, CO — The Verizon Foundation today awarded a second $10,000 grant to the American Red Cross to support the agency’s ongoing relief efforts for Colorado residents and others affected by the Waldo Canyon and other fires. The company previously awarded an initial $10,000 grant to the agency to support its relief efforts related to the High Park fire.

Last week, Verizon Wireless implemented a mobile giving program for customers looking for a simple way to contribute to relief and assistance efforts supporting communities affected by the multiple fires in Colorado. Wireless customers can use their mobile phones to make $10 donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Donating is easy – customers simply text the word REDCROSS from their mobile phone to the organization’s designated 90999 short code:

  • American Red Cross Relief: Text REDCROSS to 90999

Verizon Wireless waives text-messaging fees for disaster relief, so text messages are free when used to make donations and 100 percent of each $10 donation goes to the Red Cross. For Verizon Wireless customers who pay monthly bills, the $10 donations will appear on the next regular monthly bill.  For customers using the company’s prepaid services, the $10 donation will be taken from customers’ prepaid balances.

Additionally, the Satellite Solutions Group of Verizon Business is on site at the El Paso County Evacuation Center near the Waldo Canyon Fire. Support from the team includes a full-sized semi-trailer truck featuring a fully-equipped communications center, staffed by Verizon employees to assist local residents with communications and other needs. The Verizon-branded trailer is equipped with 24 web stations for voice and data access, multiple flat panel TVs to follow the latest fire developments, mobile device charging stations and other services to help those displaced.
