INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Verizon Wireless named WTHR-TV’s Community Affairs Director Angela Cain the first broadcaster in the nation to receive a HopeLine® Champion Award for her 10 years of work raising community awareness about domestic violence.

Since joining WTHR-TV, Cain and her staff have been honored with several awards including regional Emmys earned during the “Shattering the Silence” campaign, which has included special news reports and public service announcements broadcast from the Indianapolis-based NBC affiliate station.

The HopeLine Champion Award has historically been reserved for law enforcement officials, but Verizon officials decided to put her first in Indiana and the nation as the sole broadcast recipient due to the nature of her work.

“Angela’s unwavering dedication through her station to inform the public, facilitate grants and educate everyone on this issue is unmatched,” said John Granby, president – Indiana/Kentucky/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless.  “Her 10-year commitment to the cause is a remarkable achievement and of critical importance to the community.”

HopeLine from Verizon collects no-longer-used phones, batteries and accessories – in any condition from any carrier – and then refurbishes, sells or recycles the phones and donates the proceeds to domestic violence organizations throughout the country and in Indiana.

Last year in Indiana, Hoosier nonprofits received more than $200,000 in cash grants from HopeLine and the Verizon Foundation.  Also, Hoosier shelters received phones with more than 2.7 million minutes of donated air time for shelter residents.  In 2011, Hoosiers donated 18,478 no-longer-used wireless phones to help fund HopeLine grants for Indiana nonprofits.

WTHR-TV’s “Shattering the Silence” fund, managed by the Domestic Violence Network in Indianapolis, raises money for healthy relationship programs for schools and youth agencies.  “Angela has been our Number One advocate in assisting Indiana schools to provide healthy relationship training programs for our children,” said DVN CEO Julie Marsh.

With partial support from the “Shattering the Silence” fund, a number of Indiana groups including Prevail, Inc. of Hamilton County, Ruth Lilly Health Education Center of Marion County, Turning Point Domestic Violence Services of Johnson County and Alternatives, Inc. of Madison County, have provided healthy relationship education training for 61,422 students living in 12 counties attending 145 schools.

“I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than Angie,” said WTHR-TV’s President and General Manager John Cardenas.  “Her passion and unwavering commitment to this cause is boundless. I have no doubt that she has impacted thousands of lives through her hard work and dedication and she deserves to be recognized in this way.”

Verizon also donated $1,000 to the Domestic Violence Network in Cain’s name.
