HUNTINGTON, WV — Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has led the wireless sector in supporting laws to eliminate driver distractions. Now that many states, including West Virginia, have passed laws to make texting while driving illegal, Verizon Wireless is continuing its effort to raise awareness and encourage safety behind the wheel.

Starting in select stores this Thursday, including the Pullman Square location on Third Avenue across from Hall of Fame Café, Verizon Wireless will encourage drivers to take the “Don’t Text & Drive” pledge. Those who sign a pledge card at participating Verizon Wireless stores will receive a vehicle cling that reads “Please don’t text and drive” as a reminder to focus on the road while driving.

“Verizon Wireless was the first carrier to underscore the importance of responsible driving while using wireless devices,” said Mark Frazier, president–Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia Region, Verizon Wireless. “With more states outlawing texting while driving, we are reminded that when behind the wheel, safe driving is our number one priority. Verizon wants you to get home safely, so please don't text and drive.”

The campaign is aimed at drivers of all ages but particularly focuses on educating teens on the dangers of texting while driving. In fact, two West Virginia high schools stand to benefit from the “Don’t Text & Drive” pledge contest.

Two Verizon Wireless stores, the Pullman Square and the Trace Fork location, are competing in the pledge contest. The Verizon Wireless store with the most pledge cards signed throughout the five-week contest will win $2,000 for its local high school from Verizon Wireless while $500 will be given to the other school just for taking part in the challenge. Each store will donate its winnings to its respective high school in its community.

Customers can take the pledge any day of the week, though each Saturday during the five-week contest, the two participating Verizon Wireless locations will hold special “Sign It Saturday” events, in which wireless users are encouraged to stop by to take the pledge and receive their complimentary vehicle cling. Verizon Wireless will update its standings each Friday and report them via tweets from @VZWLaura.
