When the U.S. Green Building Council invited Verizon Wireless to a “heavy medal” event in Phoenix, rumors of a Led Zeppelin reunion proved to be unfounded, but the occasion was still one for the record books.

The organization’s Arizona Chapter hosted its inaugural Heavy Medal Awards luncheon to honor companies with outstanding achievements in “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” or LEED certification for short. They recognized Verizon Wireless for earning the most Gold and Silver Certifications for LEED Commercial Interiors of any business in the state of Arizona.

Verizon recently passed a major milestone in being more “green,” surpassing 100 retail stores that have earned the prestigious LEED designation.

The LEED rating system is the benchmark for green buildings. Each LEED-certified Verizon Wireless store optimizes water and energy use, enhances indoor environmental quality and reduces waste.
