Today’s racing fans have the need for high-tech speed and power -- and not just from their favorite car – when visiting the famed speedway. Auto sports aficionados demand the most from their smartphones, tablets and other wireless technologies to share their experiences when visiting the track.

To stay ahead of high traffic demands during the Daytona 500, Verizon WirelessDistributed Antenna System technicians installed a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and other advanced technology at the Daytona International Speedway. The DAS consists of hundreds of small antennas and a base station permanently positioned around Daytona’s famous high-banked oval to serve fans in the suites, grandstand, pit row and infield.

The new DAS is a major project that will rev up service at the 480-acre motorsports complex for more than 200,000 fans and worldwide news media.

“Race fans nowadays don’t just bring a beer cooler and a ballcap to the races,” said Gus Real, system performance manager. “They carry smartphones, tablets and other wireless devices to post pics from the pits and access real-time news on their favorite racers. The high-volume, high-speed traffic on our network inside the speedway is a little bit like the white-knuckled action out on the track.”

These enhancements make it possible for billions of calls, texts, photos, videos and other connections to be completed on Verizon’s network during Daytona’s “speedweeks.”
