The old-school inbox has been replaced and magnified with multiple email accounts, social networks and smartphones. The challenge of staying on top of what needs to be answered and what can be deleted has grown.

As communications come from every direction, important information might slip through the cracks if not properly managed. Apps such as Cloze can combine messages from email, Twitter, Facebook and more into one single platform. Additionally, the app determines the priority of messages by analyzing the user’s email and social history, as well as current activity, prioritizing who matters the most and moving those people to the top.

Settings adjustments may be the answer to minimize a burgeoning email inbox. Not only does Outlook allow users to keep their inbox organized through folders and filters, it gives users the option to assign emails to a specific category making them easier to find when needed. Users who feel the need to reply to a note, but do not have the time to do so, can set up automated responses and quickly clear those messages out of their inbox.

However, inbox overload is not only for the recipient; it can plague the sender as well. Yesware for Gmail allows the sender to make sure their communication made it through the clutter of the recipient’s inbox by letting the sender know if the email is unopened. The tool improves email efficiency by tracking the recipient’s activity, as well as setting reminders when follow-up is due.

Even catching up on voicemail can be a time consuming task. With Visual Voicemail, users can scroll through messages received and select which ones they wish to listen to and erase unwanted ones. The service also lets users archive important voicemails on their phone or send them to an email inbox for future use.

By organizing and streamlining communications, the insurmountable task of attacking intimidatingly full inboxes can become manageable.
