And a growing (and growling) number of these spooky snaps will be of our furry, fanged, four-legged friends. The National Retail Federation estimates $330 million will be spent on pet costumes this year.

In order to capture the best photos of cat witches, dog wizards and more, here are some tricks from Digital Photography School:

  • Avoid using a flash, which can cause red-eye and frighten your pet.
  • Dog and cat eyes can be very expressive, so focus there.
  • Sit on the floor and shoot from their level.
  • A call or whistle will catch your critter’s attention for a moment to capture an alert expression or posture.

These funny Halloween pet pics and videos can cause a howl, but don’t make your costumed critters growl. Below are Halloween wardrobe tips from the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals):

  • Don’t put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it, because wearing a costume may cause undue stress.
  • A costume should not constrict the animal’s movement or hearing or impede his or her ability to breathe, bark or meow.
  • Take a close look at the costume to make sure it does not have small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces.

So, if your smartphone or tablet has snapped some safe, cute and comical costume shots, share them on Twitter with @VZWChuck for a happy Howl-o-ween.
