Sometimes, it just happens: You drop your phone in the parking lot, let it slip from your fingers over a glass of water, or leave it on a table at a restaurant. You don’t have to worry about mistakes ruining your shiny new device if you take some precautions ahead of time.

Here are three next steps to consider when the holidays bring you a new tech toy:

   1. Pick up a LIFEPROOF case. This case makes your smartphone waterproof (in up to 6.5 feet of liquid for up to an hour) and provides protection against dirt, snow and shock. It’s the thinnest, lightest and strongest all-protective case you can get.

   2. Download an app like Where’s My Droid or Find My iPhone. These apps can help you locate a misplaced phone by vibrating or ringing until you are able to find it. If the device has been lost or stolen, you can locate it on a map using GPS. You can also remotely lock the device or display alert messages.

   3. Sign up for a Total Mobile Protection plan. This Verizon program includes insurance, extends the manufacturer’s warranty and offers next day device replacement. Total Mobile Protection also offers premium tech support and security to protect mobile devices from viruses, malware and other mobile threats with the Verizon Mobile Security app.
