Fan viewing habits have changed significantly since 2010, when Vancouver, B.C., hosted the last Winter Games. An estimated 213,000 spectators will travel to Sochi, Russia, but many people will watch the Olympics from afar. Due to changing consumer habits, this year’s Winter Games will see a breakthrough in online streaming.

NBC, the official network of the Olympics in the U.S., will be airing more than 230 hours of live broadcast content from Sochi on its NBC Sports Network. This is the first Winter Games where viewers will have access to even more content through streaming. NBC is offering more than 1,000 hours of live streaming coverage, including event replays and behind-the-scenes footage available directly on a tablet or smartphone.

NBC’s Live Extra site is a subscription service that offers second-screen viewing options through a free mobile companion app. Viewers can also take advantage of additional special content through the service, including athlete interviews, profiles and even medal ceremonies – raising the Olympic viewing experience to the next level.

In addition to apps for streaming live events and special content, apps like Sochi 2014 Guide and Sochi Olympic Winter Games are available to navigate event schedules and view the latest medal updates.

Viewers who prefer direct engagement can turn to social media apps, including TwitterInstagram and Vine, to connect with competitors, fans and reporters covering the Games. They can also download an Olympics-themed cowbell app to help cheer on their favorite athletes.

With live streaming video and mobile technology, the amazing display of talent at the 2014 Winter Olympics is within any viewer’s reach, even when they’re on the go.
