A mobile-friendly application process, combined with a mobile-optimized website and social media elements, can be key strategies for landing top talent for small businesses today.

Job applicants are using their mobile devices not only to get alerts about openings, but also to research company reviews from employees, salaries, interview questions, and interview reviews from recent candidates, according to a Glassdoor survey. The survey also found that 68 percent of job seekers use their mobile devices at least once a week during their searches.

Mobile has become such an important recruitment strategy that there’s even an annual conference focused on the topic. Yet, just 13 percent of recruiting leaders say they’ve invested enough in mobile-friendly recruiting, according to LinkedIn Talent Solutions. That means small businesses can get a jump on the competition by incorporating some mobile strategies into their recruiting efforts with several tips culled from recruiting experts:

  • Provide a responsive website design that automatically adapts for viewing and interaction on smartphones, tablets, or laptops or desktop devices.
  • Ensure the application process is user-friendly by:

    - Making the initial online application process seamless and efficient, lasting no longer than a minute or two and allowing candidates to express interest with a single click that will indicate their interest in receiving an email.
    - Allowing applicants to upload their resumes from their smartphones, tablets, or online document storage locations.
    - Giving them the ability to save a partially-completed application and come back to it at a later time (this strategy can “reduce your drop-off rate and make for a better candidate experience,” according to a white paper recently published by recruiting software company iCIMS).
    - Enabling applicants to customize their resumes by editing them on the application site.
    - Letting applicants track the status of their applications via mobile.

  • Incorporating a social media strategy to engage candidates is increasingly important, considering LinkedIn found that 64 percent of active job seekers browse career opportunities on social networks:

    - For job searchers – both active and passive pursuers – consider sharing open positions and job fairs, and employing a consistent, branded company presence on social networks.
    - For active candidates – opt in for additional job opening notifications; send messages easily via a smartphone or tablet with relevant information.

Mobile is increasingly relevant for all three prongs of the recruiting process – sharing job opportunities, getting the right candidates to apply and engaging with ideal candidates. Whether your small business is planning a major campaign or just looking for that one perfect candidate, consider incorporating mobile into the recruiting process.
