In 1994, then-Senator Joe Biden drafted a landmark piece of legislation known as the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to address domestic and sexual violence. Over the past two decades, Vice President Biden has been unwavering in his commitment to ending all forms of domestic violence and supporting organizations that help victims become survivors, like the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project (DCVLP).

The DCVLP provides high-quality, pro-bono family law services to low-income residents of the greater Washington, D.C., metropolitan area who are victims of domestic violence. The genius behind this non-profit is its success in tapping an unused resource – experienced lawyers who have left full-time legal practice, many of them to raise families, who want to use their legal skills to help those with urgent needs in the community.

During this year’s annual DCVLP celebration, Vice President Joe Biden welcomed and thanked Washington-Baltimore-Virginia Regional President Marquett Smith and PR Associate Director Melanie Ortel for Verizon’s corporate leadership on domestic violence prevention and the company’s ongoing support of the DCVLP.

Over the past two years, HopeLine from Verizon, which collects no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories and turns them into support for domestic violence organizations nationwide, and the Verizon Foundation have contributed nearly $40,000 to support the work of the DCVLP in helping victims become survivors.
