5 Quotable Quotes About 5G

By on September 12, 2014

At the very start of Super Mobility Week, the new CTIA-The Wireless Association “mega-show” in Las Vegas, industry news and information outlet Fierce Wireless hosted a panel discussion, “The 5G Roadmap: How Do We Plan for Tomorrow’s Wireless Networks?”

Fierce Wireless editor and panel moderator, Sue Marek, on Monday (September 9) discussed the future with five industry leaders, including Verizon Wireless Vice President of Network Support, Mike Haberman.

One clear message was that 5G – the next possible evolution of wireless technology – is still mostly a twinkle in the technologist’s eye and 4G LTE is a robust technology that is revolutionizing wireless – and plenty of great products and services are ahead. Panelists agreed much work needs to be done to hit a 2020 target, even though some Asian operators are talking about trialing “5G” as early as 2018.

Maybe CNN technology reporter James O’Toole summed it up best when he wrote:

“Is 5G around the corner? Not quite. The problem with 5G? No one’s quite sure what it is yet.”   http://money.cnn.com/2014/09/10/technology/mobile/5g-wireless/

Here are additional quotes from panelists that would indicate there’s plenty to do.

  • Haberman said: “I think the key now is defining what the requirements are for 5G.  We need to figure out what problem we’re trying to solve.”
  • Another panelist said: “5G is a little more confusing as we think about it.”
  • “Virtualization software (for 5G) means different things to different people.” (Haberman)
  • Yet another panelist said: “How can you know you’re trialing 5G…when you don’t even know what it is!”
