XLTE from Verizon Wireless Completes the Pass

Football fans across the nation are passionately rooting and supporting their favorite professional teams. To get closer to the game, and the overall fun and experience, many fans bring their mobile devices to the game to enhance their experience by:

  • Taking photos and videos of pre-game tailgating and then sending them to friends across the nation
     
  • Checking game time news, stats and scores of other games

  • Adjusting fantasy league rosters

  • Making calls and checking in

Part of the fun is sharing the thrill with friends through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) and by email and texting. Completing the pass is essential in football and in the mobile world.

There are other technologies which Verizon Wireless has added to the mobile experience playbook – small cells and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) – that give the fans an enhanced live-game experience through reliable connectivity.  

Small Cells

Small cells are mini cell sites. They have the same function as the ones typically seen on towers along the highway or on top of buildings in cities. The physical properties of small cells allow them to be placed in locations that won’t accommodate a regular cell site -- and they help augment capacity in a given area.

Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS)

Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) is a series of antennae that are typically connected by fiber.  Each antenna is like a base station or a small cell. One example where Verizon Wireless deployed a DAS is at Super Bowl XLVIII in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Here, DAS enabled Verizon Wireless to grow the capacity of the network by more than 800 times that of the previous Super Bowl, and the fans loved it – they used 1.9 terabytes of data during the game sharing their experiences. 

So for every pass, every rush, every down and every field goal, the Verizon Wireless network is a solid line of offense for its customers’ videos, pictures and social media posts to go straight down the field into the end zone.
