When you get a new device or switch devices, you need to activate it first. Once the device is activated, you can transfer your contacts, photos, videos and more to your new device.
Verizon Cloud's Content Transfer feature can copy your:
- Text and multimedia messages
- Call logs
Note: If you're switching between an Android device and iPhone or two iPhones, only contacts, pictures and videos can be transferred.
This info can help if you:
- Are a current Verizon Wireless customer

- Weren't using Verizon Cloud or Backup AssistantSM Plus on your old device
Note: If you were using Cloud on your old device, refer to our pages for restoring content on Android™ devices or Apple® iPhone®.
- Have already activated your new device
- Still have content to transfer from your old device
- Have devices compatible with the Verizon Cloud app:
- Android™ device with OS version 2.3 or higher
- iPhone® with iOS 6 or higher
- Are switching between two Android devices, two iPhones or one of each
Note: This guide is only for first-time use of Verizon Cloud's Content Transfer feature. Learn how to use the Content Transfer feature after initial setup.
Step 1: Connect Both Devices to the Same Wi-Fi Network
Step 2: Download the Verizon Cloud App to Both Devices
The steps to download the Verizon Cloud app vary based on your device type:
- Android - Verizon Cloud may already be on your device. Open the App menu on your device and look for Cloud. If you find it, you'll need to check the version type.
If you don't see Cloud on your device or you need to install it. Open the Play Store app and search for "Verizon Cloud." Once you find it, download it.
Note: If Verizon Cloud doesn't appear in the search results, your device may not be compatible.
- iPhone - Search for and download the Verizon Cloud app from the Apple App StoreSM. If you currently use Backup Assistant Plus, you'll need to uninstall it and install Verizon Cloud instead.
- Already have Verizon Cloud? You'll need at least version 14.2 of Verizon Cloud to transfer content between devices. To check the version of Cloud you have:
a. Open the Verizon Cloud app.
b. Tap the Navigation Menu icon in the upper-left corner of the screen.
c. Tap Settings.
d. Tap About.
e. Tap App Version.
If you don't have version 14.2 or higher, you'll need to update the app from your device's app store.
Step 3: Transfer Content
When you're ready to begin the transfer, open Verizon Cloud on your old device and tap Get Started. Follow the onscreen instructions to pair your devices, select which content to transfer and complete the transfer process.
Tip: If you're trying to pair devices and one device can't find the other, let the process timeout and tap Pair again.
An estimated transfer time is provided on the screen after you select which content to transfer. Transfer time can vary depending on:
- Amount of content you select to transfer
- Capabilities of your router
- Other devices connected to the router
If the transfer process is abruptly stopped, the app will keep track of where the transfer left off. Pair the devices again and restart the process. Any content previously transferred will be skipped.
Verizon Cloud only pulls files from main folder locations on your old device (see chart below). To transfer content stored in apps and other locations, you need to move it to one of the main folders listed below.

Step 4: Check Your New Device for Your Content
Once the process completes, make sure your content is on your new device. Content isn't deleted from your old device during the transfer process; it's simply copied to your new device. We suggest performing a hard (factory) reset on your old device once you've confirmed all of your content has transferred successfully. Refer to your device's user guide to learn how to perform a hard reset.
Note: If it looks like some of your content didn't transfer it's probably because Verizon Cloud only copies files from main folder locations on your old device.
To use Content Transfer after the initial setup and transfer:
- On both devices open the Cloud app from the Home screen of each device or each device's Apps menu.
- Tap the Navigation Menu icon in the upper-left corner of the screen on both devices.
- Tap TOOLS on both devices.
- Tap Content Transfer on both devices.
- Tap Copy content FROM this device on the device you are transferring content from.
- Tap Copy content TO this device on the device you are transferring content to.
- Follow the devices' onscreen instructions for the remainder of the process
You've successfully transferred content with the Verizon Cloud Content Transfer feature.
