Initial Activation and Setup - Apple® iPad®

Connected to iTunes USB Setup Method

Caution iTunes version 10.5 or higher must be installed before the initial setup can be completed. Refer to iTunes: How to find which version you are using and Download and Install iTunes for additional assistance. For iTunes system requirements, refer to iTunes System requirements. If iTunes is already installed, be sure to check for updates. Refer to Install System Updates - iTunes for assistance.

  1. Close any open app.
  2. Power the iPad on.
  3. Connect the iPad to the computer via USB cable.
  4. If prompted with an available software update, is is recommended to download and update.
    Note For assistance, refer to iOS Updates - Apple iPad.
  5. From the iTunes Welcome to Your New iPad screen click Continue.
  6. Click Get Started.
    Note Click register later if you do not want to be prompted during the setup process.
  7. Review the License Agreement. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement then click Continue.

WiFi Connection Setup Method

Caution Warnings:

  • If a firewall is setup on the computer / WiFi network that is preventing access to port 443, the iPad activation fails.
  • Verify that the iPad has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge the iPad for approximately 15 minutes.
  • The alternate activation process takes 2-3 minutes and an active WiFi network must be available.
  1. Press the Power button to power the iPad on.
  2. Drag the unlock switch right, to unlock the device.
  3. Tap the language.
  4. Tap the country or region.
  5. Tap the Wi-Fi network.
  6. Enter the Wi-Fi network password then tap Join.
  7. Tap the location services option.
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  8. If prompted, tap the Set Up option then tap Next.
    • Set Up as New iPad
    • Restore from iCloud Backup
    • Restore from iTunes Backup.
  9. When prompted to sign in with or create a new Apple ID, tap the option.
    Note To skip the Apple ID step tap Skip This Step then continue with step 11.
  10. If prompted, tap Don't Use.
  11. Review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
  12. Tap Agree.
  13. Enter a 4-digit passcode.
  14. Re-enter the 4-digit passcode.
  15. Tap the Siri option:
    • Use Siri
    • Don't use Siri
  16. Tap the Diagnostics option.
    • Automatically Send
    • Don't Send
  17. Tap Get Started.
  18. For assistance with the Cellular Data activation, refer to Cellular Data Activation.
    Only the iPad 2 and later models with Verizon Wireless cellular modules are capable of Cellular Data.

Sign in With Your Apple ID

  1. Enter the information in the appropriate fields then tap Next.
    • Apple ID
    • Password
  2. Review the Terms & Conditions then tap Agree.
  3. Tap Agree.
  4. Tap Don't Use iCloud.
    For assistance with setting up iCloud at a later time, refer to iCloud Settings.
  5. Tap Don't Use.
  6. If prompted, verify the desired iMessage/FaceTime addresses then tap Next.
    Selected when a check mark is present.
  7. Enter a 4-digit passcode.
  8. Re-enter the 4-digit passcode.
  9. Tap the Siri option:
    • Use siri
    • Don't use Siri
  10. Tap the Diagnostics option:
    • Automatically Send
    • Don't Send
  11. Tap Get Started.
  12. For assistance with the Cellular Data activation, refer to Cellular Data Activation.
    Only the iPad 2 and later models with Verizon Wireless cellular modules are capable of Cellular Data.

Create a Free Apple ID

  1. From the Date of Birth section, enter the following information then tap Next.
    • Month
    • Day
    • Year
  2. Enter the name information then tap Next:
    • First Name
    • Last Name
  3. Tap the Create Apple ID option then tap Next:
    • Use your current email address
    • Get a free iCloud email address
  4. Enter the email address then tap Next.
    Note This will be the Apple ID.
  5. If prompted, tap Create.
  6. Enter a password.
    Note Must be at least eight characters and include a number, an uppercase letter and a lowercase letter.
  7. Re-enter the password then tap Next.
  8. From the Security Info section, choose questions then enter the appropriate answer (required three times).
    Note These are used to verify identity.
  9. Tap Next.
  10. From the Optional Rescue Email section, enter an email address then tap Next.
    Note Used when the above questions can't be answered.
    Note Cannot be the same as the Apple ID / email address.
  11. Tap the Email Updates switch to turn on/off email updates from Apple then tap Next.
  12. Review the Terms & Conditions then tap Agree.
  13. Tap Agree.
  14. Tap Don't Use iCloud.
    For assistance with setting up iCloud at a later time, refer to iCloud Settings.
  15. Tap Don't Use.
  16. Tap Next.
  17. Tap Skip.
  18. Enter a 4-digit passcode.
  19. Re-enter the 4-digit passcode.
  20. Tap the Siri option:
    • Use siri
    • Don't use Siri
  21. Tap the Diagnostics option:
    • Automatically Send
    • Don't Send
  22. Tap Get Started.
  23. For assistance with the Cellular Data activation, refer to Cellular Data Activation.
    Only the iPad 2 and later models with Verizon Wireless cellular modules are capable of Cellular Data.
