Initial Activation and Setup - Apple® iPhone® 4

These instructions help you activate your iPhone 4.

Note Notes:

Caution Warnings:

  • Verify that the old device is powered off prior to activating the new device or issues with activating or establishing data connection may occur.
  • If the activation process is performed using an incorrect Apple ID, it is recommended to hard reset the device then Sign In to iTunes with the correct Apple ID while tethered to the computer.
  • The activation process takes 2-3 minutes and an active Internet connection on the computer that iTunes is installed on.
  • The initial activation process must be done using iTunes. Subsequent activations and updates can be done by performing a *228 over-the-air activation. Refer to Performing over-the-air activation for assistance.
  • If a firewall is setup on the computer that is preventing access to port 443, iPhone activation will fail.
  • Verify that iPhone has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge iPhone for approximately 15 minutes.

Caution The Wi-Fi activation method is only available on devices upgraded to iOS 5 or higher.

 

iTunes Activation Method

Note The iTunes images below may differ if using iTunes software version 11 or higher. To verify the iTunes software version refer to iTunes: How to find which version you are using for assistance.

 

  1. From the computer, close any open applications.
  2. Press the power button to power iPhone on.

  3. Open the iTunes application on the computer.

  4. Connect iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
  5. If prompted with an available software update, it is recommended to download and update.
    For assistance, refer to iOS Updates - Apple® iPhone® 4.
  6. From the iTunes application on the computer, click Continue.

  7. Review and agree with the terms and conditions, then click Continue.

  8. If prompted, click Update Settings.

  9. Click OK.

  10. From the computer, follow any additional iTunes on screen prompts.
  11. From iPhone, follow the on screen prompts.
  12. Confirm that the status bar at the top of the screen changes from No Service to Verizon.
    This process may take 2-3 minutes.
  13. Select Dismiss to complete the activation process.
  14. Click the Eject button to the right of the device name. iPhone can then be safely disconnected from the computer.
    For iTunes version 11 or higher, select the Eject icon on the iPhone button in the upper-right.

Wi-Fi Activation Method

Caution Warnings:

  • The alternate activation process takes 2-3 minutes and an active WiFi network must be available.
  • The Wi-Fi activation method is only available on devices upgraded to iOS 5 or higher.
  • If a firewall is setup on the computer / Wi-Fi network that is preventing access to port 443, iPhone activation will fail.
  • Verify that iPhone has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge iPhone for approximately 15 minutes.

 

  1. Press the power button to power iPhone on.

  2. Slide the unlock switch right, to unlock the device.
  3. Select the language.
    iOS version 6 or earlier select the language then select the arrow icon to continue.
  4. Select the country or region.
    iOS versions 6 or earlier select the country or region then select Next to continue.
  5. Select the Wi-Fi network
    iOS versions 6 or before select choose Wi-Fi network, select the Wi-Fi network then select Next to continue.
  6. Enter the Wi-Fi network password then select Join.
  7. Once the device connects to the WiFi network, select Continue.
    iOS versions 6 or before select select Next.
  8. Select the location services option.
    iOS versions 6 or before select the location services option then select Next.
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  9. Select the Set Up option.
    iOS versions 6 or before select the Set Up option then select Next.
    • Set Up as New iPhone
    • Restore from iCloud Backup
    • Restore from iTunes Backup
  10. Select Skip This Step.
    If prompted with Are you Sure, select Skip again.
    For assistance creating an Apple ID at a later time refer to Create Apple ID.
  11. Review the Terms and Conditions then select Agree.
  12. If prompted, select Agree.
  13. Enter a 4-digit passcode.
  14. If prompted, select Use Code.
  15. Re-enter the 4-digit passcode.
  16. Select the Diagnostics & Usage option.
    iOS versions 6 or before select the Diagnostics & Usage option then select Next.
    • Automatically Send
    • Don't Send
  17. Select Get Started.
    iOS versions 6 or before select Start Using iPhone.
    If presented with Can Siri help you? select Dismiss.
  18. Confirm that the status bar at the top of the screen changes from No Service to Verizon.
    This process may take 2-3 minutes.
  19. If prompted, select Dismiss to complete the activation process.
