Initial Activation and Setup - Apple® iPhone® 5C

These instructions help you activate your iPhone 5C.

Caution Warnings:

  • If the activation process is performed using an incorrect Apple ID, it is recommended to hard reset iPhone then Sign In to iTunes with the correct Apple ID while tethered to the computer.
  • Verify the old device is powered off prior to activating the new device or issues with activating or establishing data connection may occur.
Wi-Fi Activation Method - Over Wi-Fi (No Verizon network coverage is required to complete activation)
OTA Activation Method - Over-the-air Cellular (Requires Verizon network coverage to complete activation)
iTunesActivation Method - iTunes (No Verizon network coverage is required to complete activation)

 

Wi-Fi Activation Method

Caution Warnings:

  • The Wi-FI activation process takes 2-3 minutes and an active Wi-Fi network must be available.
  • If a firewall is setup on the computer/Wi-Fi network that is preventing access to port 443, iPhone activation fails.
  • Verify the iPhone has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge iPhone for approximately 15 minutes.

 

  1. Press the power button to power iPhone on.

  2. Slide the unlock switch right, to unlock the device.

  3. Select the language.

  4. Select the country or region.

  5. Select the Wi-Fi network.

  6. Enter the Wi-Fi network password then tap Join.

  7. Select the location services option.
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services

  8. Select the Set Up option.
    • Set Up as New iPhone
    • Restore from iCloud Backup
    • Restore from iTunes Backup.

  9. Tap Skip This Step.
    For assistance with creating an Apple ID at a later time, refer to Create Apple ID.

  10. If prompted, tap Skip.

    For assistance with setting up iCloud at a later time, refer to iCloud Settings.

  14. If prompted, tap Don't Use Find My iPhone.

  15. If prompted, deselect any numbers or email addresses
    Numbers and email addressed are selected when a check mark is present.

  16. Select the Siri option.

  17. If prompted, enter a 4-digit passcode.

  18. If prompted, tap Use Code.

  19. If prompted, re-enter the 4-digit passcode.

  20. Select the Diagnostics & Usage option.

    Select Diagnostics option
  21. Select Get Started.
    If presented with Can Siri help you?, tap Dismiss.

  22. Confirm that the status bar at the top of the screen changes from No Service to Verizon.
    This process may take 2-3 minutes.

Over The Air Activation Method

Caution Warnings:

  • The alternate activation process takes 2-3 minutes and the device must be in a Verizon Wireless 3G or LTE area.
  • Verify the iPhone has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge iPhone for approximately 15 minutes.

 

  1. Press the power button to power iPhone on.

  3. Select the country or region.

  4. Verify the device is indicating a 3G or LTE signal then tap Use Cellular Connection.

iTunes Activation Method

Caution Warnings:

  • During the activation process, specific update and restore error messages may be received within iTunes. Refer to Apple article: # TS3694 - iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting for assistance.
  • The recommended activation process takes 2-3 minutes and an active Internet connection on the computer that iTunes is installed on.
  • If a firewall is setup on the computer that is preventing access to port 443, iPhone activation fails.
  • Verify the iPhone has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge iPhone for approximately 15 minutes.

 

  1. From the computer, close any open apps.
  2. Open the iTunes app on the computer.
  3. If prompted with an available software update, it is recommended to download and update.
  4. Connect the iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
  5. From the computer, follow any additional iTunes on screen prompts.
  6. Press the power button to power iPhone on.
  7. From the iPhone, follow the on screen prompts.
  8. Slide the unlock switch right to unlock the device.
  9. Select the language.
  10. Select the country or region.
  11. Select the location services option.
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  12. Select the Set Up option.
    • Set Up as New iPhone
    • Restore from iCloud Backup
    • Restore from iTunes Backup.

  27. From iTunes, click the Eject button to the right of the device name. iPhone can then be safely disconnected from the computer.
    For iTunes version 11 or higher, select the Eject button to the right of the iPhone button in the upper-right.
