Find My iPhone - Apple® iPhone® 4S

Note Find My iPhone is an app that assists with locating a missing iOS device from another iOS device or computer. Before Find My iPhone can be used to locate devices, it needs to be enabled on each of the iOS devices. To see all the devices when you sign in to Find My iPhone, each device needs to be setup with the same iCloud account information. For assistance enabling Find My iPhone, refer to Enable/Disable Find My iPhone.

Note Find My iPhone requires iOS 5 or later (iOS 6 or later is required for Lost Mode). To determine Device Software Version, refer to View Software Version.

Note During the initial setup and activation of an iPhone, the Find My iPhone app may have been pre-installed. If the app was not pre-installed, refer to Download/Install Find My iPhone app for assistance.

Note An Apple ID must be created to use Find My iPhone. For assistance creating an Apple ID, refer to Create Apple ID.

 

  1. From the home screen, select Find iPhone.

  2. Enter the Apple ID and password then select Sign In.

  3. The Find My iPhone app locates the device.

Locate Device

Note See the locations of online iOS devices on a map.

  1. In the My Devices list, the dot to the left of the device's name indicates it's status.
    • A green dot indicates it's online
    • A gray dot indicates it's offline

  2. Select a device with an online status (green dot indicator).

Play Sound

Note If a missing online iOS device is nearby, play a sound on it to assist with finding it.

  1. Select one of the devices.

  2. Select Play Sound.

  3. A sound plays on the missing iOS device.

Lost Mode

Note Securely lock an online iOS device and display a custom message along with a contact number. The finder of the device is able to call the contact number from the device itself.

  1. Select one of the devices.

  2. Select Lost Mode.
    Share icon
  3. Enter a 4-digit passcode.
    Share icon
  4. Re-enter the 4-digit passcode.

  5. Enter a 10-digit phone number to be shown on the lost device's screen.

  6. Enter a message to be shown on the lost device's screen then select Done.

  7. The custom message and contact number are displayed on the missing iOS device.

Erase iPhone

Note If the online iOS device is lost or stolen it can be remotely erased, removing the personal information (e.i contacts, email, music, etc.) and settings to prevent anyone from seeing or using the information.

  1. Select one of the devices.

  2. Select Erase iPhone.

  3. Review the warning then select Erase.

  4. Enter the Apple ID password then select OK.

  5. All personal information and settings are erased from the missing iOS device.

Remove iPhone

Note If an iOS device is no longer being used, it can be removed from the Find My iPhone devices list.

  1. Select one of the devices.

  2. Select Remove.

  3. Select Remove.

  4. The iOS device are removed from the Find My iPhone device list.

Sign Out

Note Sign out of the Find My iPhone app.

From the My Devices screen select Sign Out.
