  1. What is local number portability?

    Local Number Portability is a government mandate that requires wireless and landline service providers to allow customers with eligible phone numbers to retain their phone numbers when changing service providers.

  2. How do I join Verizon Wireless and keep my current phone number?

    This process is called porting. If you have an eligible phone number, you can port it when you purchase your new Verizon Wireless phone:

    • Online –  When you purchase a phone online, you’ll be asked to pick a phone number—you can either port in your existing number or choose a new one. Start now.

    • In any Verizon Wireless store – When you purchase a phone in a store, our Sales Representative will assist you in porting your current phone number. Find a store near you.

  3. How do I port a phone number from another service provider to replace my current Verizon Wireless phone number?

    1. Go to the Change Mobile Number page in My Verizon.

    2. Select the mobile number you want to replace and click Next.

    3. Select Port an existing number.

    4. Enter the required information for porting your number and click Next.

    5. Follow the prompts to confirm the mobile number change.

    You’ve successfully ported a number to replace your current Verizon Wireless phone number.

  4. Should I cancel my existing service before porting my mobile number to Verizon Wireless?

    No, your number must remain active and free from any other change orders during the porting process. Once your number successfully ports to Verizon Wireless your old provider’s account will disconnect automatically.

  5. How do I know if my current number is eligible to be ported?

    You can check your number’s eligibility online. Most numbers are able to be ported, however, there are a variety of factors that can affect your number’s porting eligibility.

  6. What information will I need to provide when porting my number?

    When porting your number, please be ready to provide the following information:

    1. Confirmation that you’re the authorized contact on the account with your old service provider
    2. The name of your old service provider
    3. The account number of your old service as it appears on your bill.

      Note: If you’re requesting to have your number ported in-person, please bring your most recent bill with you.

    4. Your name and address as they appear on your bill
    5. The current, active phone number that you wish to keep when you port
    6. A phone number where you can be reached during the porting process (other than the number you’re porting)
    7. Your Social Security number, business Tax ID number or other information that will be used to accurately identify you to your old service provider

      Note: If you’re porting a number associated with a wireless prepaid account, you may be asked to provide additional information.

    Providing incorrect information will delay the porting process because a Customer Service Representative will need to contact you for the correct details.

  7. How long will it take to port my number?

    This depends on the type of service you have with your old provider.

    • Wireless – 4-24 business hours to complete your port.

    • Landline – 2-10 business days to complete your port.

    Note: These are minimum time frames. With certain circumstances, it could be longer.

  8. Will Verizon Wireless charge me any fees for porting my service?

    We don’t charge a specific fee for porting numbers to or from our service. However when porting out of Verizon Wireless, you may incur an Early Termination Fee (ETF) and any accrued charges, if you port out before the end of your minimum contract term.

  10. What happens to my old service once my number finishes porting?

    Your old service will disconnect automatically once the port is complete. Please check with your previous service provider for next steps.

  11. How will I know when the port to Verizon Wireless is complete?

    We’ll send a free text message to your Verizon Wireless device notifying you that your new service is activated.

  12. Can I port a number to a Verizon Wireless prepaid phone?

    Yes, you can choose to port an existing number when you activate your Verizon Wireless prepaid phone.
