Global Travel Program FAQs

General Information
  1. What is the Global Travel Program?
    The Global Travel Program provides wireless service with a basic phone, smartphone or USB modem when you’re traveling for 21 days or less to an international destination where CDMA coverage isn’t available or GSM coverage is better / more available. You don’t have to pay a rental fee or security deposit to use the Global Travel Program device. With the Global Travel Program you will:
    • Receive a device with a charger and travel adapters* before you leave the US
    • Pay the one-time shipping cost for the device
    • Be charged for any minutes, messages and data you incur while using the Global Travel Program device
    • Receive no separate bills; all charges will appear on your regular Verizon Wireless bills
    • Keep your regular phone number
    • Have access to 24 hour Global Support

    To order a Global Travel Program phone or activate one, call (800) 711-8300 while in the US.

    *iPhone® 4s doesn’t come with travel adapters.


  2. In what countries does Verizon Wireless suggest I use the Global Travel Program?
    You can use a Global Travel Program device if you’re traveling to a country without CDMA coverage, which includes most of Europe, Africa, South America and Australia. You can also use the Global Travel Program in a country where GSM coverage is better or more readily available.

    Note: The Global Travel Program device can’t be taken to or used in Cuba, Iran, North Korea or any other country where possession or use is against the law.

  3. Am I eligible for the Global Travel Program?
    You’re eligible for the Global Travel Program if you have:
    • A Verizon Wireless device
    • Plans to travel in a country without CDMA coverage or where GSM coverage is better / more available
    • Booked a trip for 21 days or less
    • A standard monthly account (i.e., not prepaid, Home Phone Connect or Push to Talk) for at least 90 days
    • A consumer, corporate, employee or government account

    Note: The Global Travel Program device can’t be taken to or used in Cuba, Iran, North Korea or any other country where possession or use is against the law.

  4. How much does it cost to have the Global Travel Program phone shipped to me?
    The shipping charge for a Global Travel Program device includes shipping to you in the US and back to Verizon Wireless. Standard 2-business day shipping is $19.99.

    Notes:
    • Other shipping options may be available depending on where the device is being shipped to. Check with the Global Support Specialist when you order the Global Travel Program device for other options.

    • Orders must be placed by 5:30 PM PT Monday-Friday and 5 PM PT on Saturday to receive in 2 business days. For example:

                      • If you want the Global Travel Program device on Wednesday, you’ll need to place the order by 5:30 PM PT on Monday.
                      • If you want the Global Travel Program device by Tuesday, you’ll need to order by 5 PM PT on Saturday.

              Call (800) 711-8300 while in the US to order a Global Travel Program device.


      • What are the rates for calls made and received while traveling internationally using the Global Travel Program?
        Review our Global Plans and Pricing page for information about plans you can add while you’re traveling and pay-as-you-go rates.


      • Are there any daily rental fees with the Global Travel Program?
        No, there are no daily rental fees charged for the Global Travel Program.


      • Do I have to pay a security deposit with the Global Travel Program?
        No, there's no security deposit associated with the Global Travel Program.


      • Do I have to change my phone number to use the Global Travel Program?
        No, you'll keep your regular mobile telephone number, voice mail and you can transfer your contact list to the Global Travel Program device using Verizon Cloud or Backup Assistant℠ Plus.


      • Do I need to do anything with the Global Travel Program device before I leave?
        Yes, you’ll need to activate and program the device from the US before traveling. Follow the instructions below to activate and program the device based on the type of device you received.

        3G Device*
        1. From a phone that’s not the Global Travel Program device, call (877) 807-4646.
        2. Provide the following information when prompted: Your US mobile number, account billing password and the order number on your receipt.
          Note: If you don’t have a billing password, provide the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number or Tax ID number
        3. Charge the device’s battery completely.
        4. From the Global Travel Program device, call *228 toll and airtime-free.
        5. When prompted, select option 1 to program the device.
        6. Wait until you hear a confirmation that programming is complete.

        *If your Global Travel Program device is iPhone, turn on the phone and follow the activation steps on the screen. Then follow steps c-f above.

        For BlackBerry device users, make sure your email service works on your Global Travel Program device in the US prior to travel. If you use BlackBerry Enterprise Server (corporate email) contact your IT department to switch your email to your Global Travel Program device. If you use the BlackBerry Internet Service (Yahoo!®, Hotmail®, AOL®, etc.) go into the email settings on the Global Travel Program device to set up your email.

        4G LTE Device

        1. From a phone that’s not the Global Travel Program device, call (877) 807-4646.
        2. Provide the following information when prompted: Your US mobile number, account billing password and the order number on your receipt.
          Note: If you don’t have a billing password, provide the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number or Tax ID number
        3. Charge the device’s battery completely.
        4. Turn on the device to make sure it’s working properly.

        All devices

        If you want access to your contacts, you’ll need to back them up to Verizon Cloud or Backup Assistant Plus from your original device, and then sync them to the Global Travel Program device.

      • Can I use the Internet with the Global Travel Program device?
        Yes, you can use the Internet while traveling. However, you’ll be charged for your data usage.

        If you plan to use any data and will be traveling in one of the 120 or more countries covered by our Global Data Plan, we suggest adding it for $25/100 MB. Otherwise, the pay-as-you-go Global data rate is $20.48/MB in most countries. Using turn-by-turn directions in a navigation app is about 5 MB/hour and accessing the Internet twice will use about 1 MB.

      • Can I download and use apps on the Global Travel Program phone?
        It depends on the type of Global Travel Program device you’re using.
        • Android™—Yes, you can download and use apps, but you’ll need a Google™ account to sign in to Google Play™ Store.
        • iPhone—Yes, you can download and use apps, but you’ll need an Apple® account to sign in to the Apple App Store℠.
        • BlackBerry®—Yes, you can download and use apps, but you’ll need a BlackBerry account to sign in to BlackBerry World™.
        • Basic phone—No, you can’t download apps.

        Note: If your Global Travel Program device isn’t connected to Wi-Fi while downloading and using apps, you’ll be charged for your data usage.

        If you plan to use any data and will be traveling in one of the 120 or more countries covered by our Global Data Plan, we suggest adding it for $25/100 MB. Otherwise, the pay-as-you-go Global data rate is $20.48/MB in most countries.       • Can I check my email with the Global Travel Program device?
        Yes, you can use the Internet to check your email while traveling. However, you’ll be charged for your data usage.

      • Can I send and receive text and multimedia messages with the Global Travel Program phone?
        Yes, you can send and receive text and multimedia messages with the Global Travel Program phone. However, you’ll be charged for each message sent and received while traveling at our Global Messaging Rates. Additionally, you’ll be charged data usage for multimedia messages sent and received.

        If you plan to use any data and will be traveling in one of the 120 or more countries covered by our Global Data Plan, we suggest adding it for $25/100 MB. Otherwise, the pay-as-you-go Global data rate is $20.48/MB in most countries.

      • Can I take pictures or videos with the Global Travel Program device?
        Yes, you can take pictures and videos with the Global Travel Program device.


      • If I take pictures or videos with the Global Travel Program device, how can I save them?
        While you have the Global Travel Program device, you can upload your pictures and videos to a computer using the USB/charging cord that came with the device. To save the pictures or videos to a computer:
        1. Plug the charging cord into the device.
        2. Remove the end that plugs into an outlet to reveal the USB connector.
        3. Plug the USB connector into a USB port on your computer.
        4. Your computer should recognize the connected device and prompt you to save your content.

        You’ve successfully transferred your content from the Global Travel Program device to a computer.


      • Who can I call if I have questions about the Global Travel Program?
        While in the US, call (800) 711-8300 to speak to a Global Support Specialist.

        For support while traveling abroad, call (908) 559-4899. If your device isn’t working, refer to the Global Support Calling Card on our Global Support page to contact us toll-free from a landline.


      • How do I return the Global Travel Program device?
        You’ll need to return the Global Travel Program device within 30 days of the date you ordered it. To return the device:
        1. Put the device, power cable, adapters and any other accessories you didn’t purchase back into the box it came in.
        2. Attach the return shipping label that was included with the device to the outside of the box.
        3. Return the device through FedEx®. You can:

        Once your return the Global Travel Program device, you’ll need to reactivate your original device.


      • I lost the return shipping label for the phone I used through the Global Travel Program. Can I get another return shipping label?
        Yes, call Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 to order a return label that will be sent to you within 5 business days.


      • What happens if I lose the Global Travel Program device or I can’t return it within 30 days?
        You’ll be charged according to the type of device you were loaned:
        • Smartphone-- $375
        • Basic phone / USB modem-- $199

        Note: You’ll also be billed for any charges you incurred while using the Global Travel Program device, which will appear on your Verizon Wireless bill in 1-2 billing cycles.


      • What do I need to do to start using my original device again after I return the Global Travel Program device?
        It depends on the type of device you have.

        3G Device
        1. Using a phone other than the one you want to start using again, call (800) 711-8300.
        2. Select Global Activation and Deactivation when prompted.
        3. Charge the device’s battery completely.
        4. From your original device, call *228 toll and airtime-free.
        5. When prompted, select option 1 to program the device.
        6. Wait until you hear a confirmation that programming is complete.

        4G LTE Device

        1. Using a phone other than the one you want to start using again, call (800) 711-8300.
        2. Select Global Activation and Deactivation when prompted.
        3. Charge the device’s battery completely.
        4. Turn on the device to make sure it’s working properly.
