How to Use Guide: Backup Assistant/ Backup Assistant Plus Contacts

[How to Use Guide]

Step 1 - Verify that Your Device Is Compatible
Smartphones and tablets

Many devices come with Backup Assistant already installed. Look for Backup Assistant in your device’s App menu. If it’s listed, your device is compatible and the app is installed. Tap on the app to open it and skip to step 3 of this guide.

If Backup Assistant isn’t in your App menu, go to the app store on your device (e.g., Google Play™, Windows® Phone Store, etc.), and search for Backup Assistant.

  • If Backup Assistant or Backup Assistant Plus appears in the search results, your device is compatible. Continue to step 2 of this guide.
  • If Verizon Cloud appears in the search results, your device is compatible with our cloud service. Refer to our Verizon Cloud FAQs for information on how to use it to back up and transfer your contacts.

If neither Backup Assistant nor Verizon Cloud appears in the search results, refer to our Contact Transfer Wizard to learn how to transfer contacts to your new device.

Basic phones

All basic phones are compatible with Backup Assistant. Skip to step 2 if you have a basic phone.

Step 2 - Install Backup Assistant / Backup Assistant Plus Contacts
These are general instructions for installing Backup Assistant or Backup Assistant Plus. To find instructions for a specific device, enter your device name and “backup assistant” (e.g., “htc one backup assistant”) in the Search box in the top right corner of our website. Instructions for your device will appear in the search results if they’re available.

Smartphones and tablets

  1. Open the app store on your device (e.g., Google Play™, Windows® Phone Store, etc.), and search for Backup Assistant.
  2. Select Backup Assistant or Backup Assistant Plus from the search results and follow the onscreen prompts to install it on your device.

Note: If Backup Assistant doesn’t appear in the search results, refer to step 1 of this guide to verify your device’s compatibility.

  3. Once the download is complete, open your App menu and tap Backup Assistant to open the app.
You’ve successfully installed and set up Backup Assistant on your device.

Basic phone

Refer to these steps on how to get Backup Assistant on your basic phone.

Step 3 - Back Up Contacts
These are general instructions for backing up your contacts on your device. To find instructions for a specific device, enter your device name and “backup assistant” (e.g., “htc one backup assistant”) in the Search box in the top right corner of our website. Instructions for your device will appear in the search results if they’re available.

Perform a manual backup
  1. Open the Backup Assistant app on your device.
  2. Select Backup Now.
You've successfully performed a manual backup.

Schedule daily recurring backups
  1. Open the Backup Assistant app on your device.
  2. Select Options and select Schedule. Or for some devices, select Recurring Sync.
  3. Select one of the time options:
    • Morning
    • Afternoon
    • Evening
    • Late Night
  4. An automatic backup will only occur if there have been changes to your device's address book since your last backup.

You've successfully set up recurring backups.

Step 4 - Restore Contacts
After switching to a new device, you’ll need to restore your backed up contacts.

These are general instructions for restoring contacts to a new device. To find instructions for a specific device, enter your device name and “backup assistant” (e.g., “htc one backup assistant”) in the Search box in the top right corner of our website. Instructions for your device will appear in the search results if they’re available.

Note: You can only restore contacts to your new device with Backup Assistant if all the following apply:
  • You backed up your contacts with Backup Assistant on your previous device.
  • Your new device is compatible with Backup Assistant.

To restore contacts:
  1. Open Backup Assistant on your new device.

Note: You may need to install Backup Assistant if it isn’t already on your device.

  2. Enter your PIN when asked, and click OK or Restore.
Your new device will then sync with the Backup Assistant server. Any contacts on the server will transfer to your device, and any new contacts on your device will be backed up to the server.

You’ve successfully restored your contacts and set up Backup Assistant on your new device.

Step 5 - Manage Contacts Online with the Backup Assistant Website
Once you’ve synced your device with Backup Assistant, you can sign in and manage your contacts on the Backup Assistant Plus website. To sign in, enter your User ID and Password for My Verizon.

Notes:
  • You’ll need to sign in using your own mobile number (or the User ID associated with your mobile number) to view and manage the contacts that are synced with your device.
  • If you aren’t already registered with My Verizon, you’ll be prompted to register when you first visit the Backup Assistant Plus website.
Your Backup Assistant web address book will display all data from your last successful backup. You can view, add, print, edit and delete contacts from the address book.

Step 6 - Troubleshoot
The information below is general troubleshooting. For troubleshooting specific to a device, you can refer to the Community Forum. This is a helpful place to find solutions or post your own questions.

Address book field issues

While most address book fields are supported by Backup Assistant, there are some address book fields and settings that aren’t. The following fields and settings aren’t supported because there’s no app read or write access, and they won’t be backed up with Backup Assistant:
  • Groups / Category
  • Ringer
  • SMS Ringer
  • Picture ID
  • Secret
  • Speed Dial
  • Voice Dial
If you do a restore of your contacts, the backed up fields will be synced to your device and all the non-supported fields above will be empty. You’ll need to re-enter these for each contact.

Backup Assistant web issues / constraints

Following these requirements will help prevent error notices when you enter and back up contact information.
  • Valid phone field characters: 0123456789*#PT
  • Valid email field characters: Must contain @ and "."
  • Required contact information:
    • First name or last name or company name
    • Phone number or email address

The Backup Assistant Service may be terminated immediately without liability upon sending notice to the email address you provided during your registration. You may end your use of the Backup Assistant Service at any time by terminating service with Verizon Wireless or removing the Backup Assistant app from your device. No refunds shall be granted for any fees paid in advance. Upon termination you will no longer have access to data, messages, files and other material you previously stored.
